Basic topographic map ČR 1 : 100 000/S-JTSK

The Basic Topographic Map of the Czech Republic 1 : 100 000 in the plane coordinate system of the Unified Cadastral Trigonometric Network (S-JTSK), hereinafter referred to as ZTM 100/S-JTSK, is a fundamental state cartographic work. As of July 1, 2023, ZTM 100/S-JTSK replaces the Basic Map of the Czech Republic 1 : 100 000 (ZM 100). ZTM 100/S-JTSK depicts the entire territory of the Czech Republic in a continuous layout of map sheets, with the territory of the Czech Republic represented on 60 map sheets.
The sectional lines of the layout (inner frames) of ZTM/S-JTSK map sheets form rectangles whose sides are parallel to the S-JTSK coordinate axes and measure 500 mm along the Y-axis and 400 mm along the X-axis at the scale of the respective map. A ZTM 100/S-JTSK map sheet thus covers an area of 50 km × 40 km. The dimensions do not include ancillary elements displayed on the printed version of the map sheet (e.g., overlap strip and frame and non-frame data). The dimensions of the printed version of the map, including all frame and non-frame data, are 480 mm × 770 mm.
ZTM 100/S-JTSK map sheets are labeled with a numeric nomenclature derived from the numbering of rows and columns of map sheets. Map sheets are also supplemented with the name of the map sheet, usually corresponding to the largest settlement on the sheet. If no settlement is present on the map sheet, another unique geographic name (peak, watercourse, land parcel) from the sheet is used. ZTM 100/S-JTSK map sheets are identified by row and column numbers, with the northernmost row labeled 01 (followed by 02, 03, …, 08 towards the south) and the westernmost column labeled 01 (followed by 02, 03, …, 10 towards the east). An example of a map sheet designation is 0506 Havlíčkův Brod.
ZTM 100/S-JTSK contains planimetric, altimetric, and descriptive data. The planimetric data includes settlements and significant economic and cultural objects, roads, water bodies, administrative unit boundaries, large protected area boundaries, vegetation, and land cover. The altimetric data covers terrain relief represented by contours with a basic interval of 20 meters, terrain steps, rock formations, and surveyed points with specified elevation. The descriptive data consists of standardized geographic names, names of municipalities and their parts, contour and surveyed point elevations, names of protected areas. The printed map sheets and data files with the map print base in PDF format also include the S-JTSK and ETRS89-TMzn kilometer grid and ETRS89 geographic grid, map frame with frame data (e.g., description of neighboring countries and affected protected areas and orographic units, coordinates) and non-frame data (e.g., legend, imprint information, graphical, numerical, and slope scale, interpolation scale of the ETRS89 coordinate system grid, graphical representation of the map in the layout of map sheets, meridian convergence and magnetic declination, graphical representation of administrative boundaries, graphical representation of elevation ratios on the map sheet in the form of colored hypsometry, etc.).
The map content is depicted only within the territory of the Czech Republic. For planimetric representation in ZTM 100, cartographic generalization methods are applied to ensure graphical clarity – censal and normative selection (omission of elements based on quantitative and qualitative parameters, or further reduction), geometric generalization (displacement, simplification of shapes, and merging of areas), and classification changes (grouping multiple element categories into one).
The processing of ZTM 100/S-JTSK data began in 2020, and full coverage of the Czech Republic was completed in April 2023. The map is produced digitally from the Data50 cartographic database, updated based on the Basic Geographic Database of the Czech Republic (ZABAGED®) and the Geographic Names Database of the Czech Republic Geonames.
The creation and updating of ZTM 100/S-JTSK is managed by the Czech Office for Surveying, Mapping and Cadastre, which publishes ZTM 100/S-JTSK data free of charge as open data in the form of map content data files including non-frame data corresponding to map sheets in PDF format (print PDF files), georeferenced map content data files corresponding to map sheets in TIFF format (TIFF raster tiles), and vector data files with the cartographic model of ZTM 100/S-JTSK corresponding to map sheets in SHP and DGN8 formats (vector data SHP/DGN8).
